Wedding Wonderland: Wedding Planning Tips For The DIY Bride

August 2011 Archives

Where Will You Sit?

The bride and groom traditionally have two options for seating at their reception; either at a sweetheart's table (where they are isolated on a newlywed island and people often feel weird approaching them) or at a head table (where the entire wedding party looks as if they are in an important board room conference).

I am happy to say that today I am coordinating a wedding where the bride and groom thought outside the box. In creating their seating chart, they decided to plop themselves right down in the thick of it... they will be sitting with their parents and siblings, just as they would for Sunday dinner or someone else's wedding! In order to mark their territory, the bride created adorable chalk board signs saying "bride" and "groom" that will hang on the back of their chairs. This is a great way for them to stand out as the couple of honor without making them feel separated from all the guests!

Weeknight Weddings

If you are looking for a way to trim some of the cost of a having a wedding, consider choosing a weeknight rather than a Friday or Saturday. You will definitely save money with vendors, such as caterers and photographers, who are typically booked solid on weekends and are therefore able to charge a great deal more for weekend weddings. You may risk losing some guests since it is often difficult for people to get away from work during the week, but if most of your guests are local anyway, it probably wouldn't be an issue. Also, if you are planning a summer wedding and are worried about your big day overlapping with someone else's, chances are that you won't have much competition on a Thursday or Sunday night.

Although "congratulations" sounds like such a weak way to describe the liberation you must be feeling now that you finally have the ability to get legally married in New York state! All I can say is that it is about time.

There are several wedding shows coming up that are gay/lesbian friendly (all of them should be if you ask me) so I wanted to let you know about them:

Sunday, August 7 from 1:00 - 4:00 at Birch Hill in Schodack
Sunday, August 21 from 11:00 - 1:30 at Blu Stone Bistro in Albany
